welcome to CETC

The Civil Engineering Training Centre

In partnership with The Solent Civil Engineering Employers’ Group, Fareham College is offering an exciting new Apprenticeship programme designed to prepare young people and adults for a career in civil engineering occupations.

The Civil Engineering and Groundworks Apprenticeship (CEGA) will enable participants to develop the skills needed to work in a variety of construction sites, and get paid a wage while gaining a recognised qualification.

This Apprenticeship is suitable for young people such as school and college leavers, or adults who are interested in the construction industry and looking for a new career direction.

As well as providing on-the-job training for students with no prior experience or knowledge of the sector, the Apprenticeship is also suitable for construction staff already working on site who want to gain a formalised qualification and develop their skills for future progression.

For further information about contributing to the programme or upskilling your staff, please contact our dedicated CETC Employer Services Team on 01329 815 153 or email the team on business@fareham.ac.uk

Solent Civil Engineering & Groundworks Apprenticeship

How is the programme delivered?

As part of the Apprenticeship, students will undertake an intensive initial training programme at our new Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC) in Lee-on-the-Solent. Students will then spend the remainder of the Apprenticeship in full time employment with one of our partner construction companies, where they will be allocated a mentor to support their skills development.

They will also receive regular visits from a CETC Assessor who will review their progress and the completion of the Apprenticeship framework.

CEGA course details

The Apprenticeship lasts for 2 years, with the first 20 weeks spent at CETC undertaking specific training to ensure students are fully-qualified and ready to work on-site.

As part of this, students will obtain the following certifications and licences, all essential for on-site employment:

  • CSCS card
  • Dumper license
  • Roller License
  • Abrasive wheels certification
  • Manual handling certification
  • CAT and Genny training
  • Banksman training
  • Driver training theory

The Apprenticeship framework enables students to gain the practical skills and experience needed to work within a variety of commercial and industrial settings including:

  • Understanding technical drawings and plans
  • Working with architects, engineering and steel fixers
  • Surveying and planning resources
  • Design and installation of temporary works
  • Laying foundations for construction work
  • Making and using concrete types
  • Understanding various stone types and their uses
  • Understanding and fitting domestic and industrial drainage
  • Installing paths, edgings, kerbs and concrete finishes
  • Laying paving slabs and block paving
  • Safely work around existing services and surrounding environment

Additional benefits to the Apprentice

Applicants will need to demonstrate they have the physical fitness to work in groundwork operations, a positive attitude, reliability and an enthusiastic approach to teamwork. For students who need support to develop the necessary functional skills to enter onto this course, the option of a Traineeship will be provided.

A Traineeship lasts for a minimum of 6 weeks and will enable the student to gain the core skills and English and Maths competency required to progress on to the full Apprenticeship, whilst simultaneously gaining work experience.

For the duration of the 20-week training course at CETC in Lee-on-the-Solent, and the duration of the Apprenticeship, a daily travel allowance will be provided.

Partners involved in delivering the Apprenticeship have sites across Hampshire, so every effort will be made to ensure apprentices are based on a site within a reasonable distance to their home locality.

Apprenticeships enable students to earn a wage while gaining their qualification. Rates of pay vary depending upon age, but are highly competitive in comparison to other Apprenticeship schemes and jobs in different industries.
